{"id":1035,"date":"2017-05-01T05:47:40","date_gmt":"2017-05-01T05:47:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/actinvest.com.au\/?p=1035"},"modified":"2017-05-01T05:47:40","modified_gmt":"2017-05-01T05:47:40","slug":"more-withdrawals-from-the-bank-of-mum-and-dad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/actinvest.com.au\/index.php\/more-withdrawals-from-the-bank-of-mum-and-dad\/","title":{"rendered":"More withdrawals from &#8216;the bank of mum and dad&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Think about what has happened in the six months since Treasury secretary John Fraser spoke of his concerns for retirement savings of parents who help their children into housing by making withdrawals from &#8220;the bank of mum and dad&#8221;.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" height=\"239\" src=\"http:\/\/www.plannerweb.com.au\/images\/bank-mum-dad.jpg\" width=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"st_facebook\">&nbsp;<\/span> <span class=\"st_twitter\">&nbsp;<\/span> <span class=\"st_linkedin\">&nbsp;<\/span><br \/>\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>House prices in Sydney and Melbourne have continued to accelerate and, anecdotally at least, so has parental financial assistance with their children&#039;s first home.<\/p>\n<p>Fraser is worried that helping children into costly housing, as homebuyers or tenants, may inhibit their own abilities to save for retirement, including through their super.<\/p>\n<p>Parents can find themselves trying to cope with something of a balancing act: trying to save to finance their own retirement and understandably wanting to help their children into the high-cost housing market.<\/p>\n<p>It is difficult to gain other than an anecdotal impression of just how much parents nearing retirement or already in retirement are helping to finance their adult children&#039;s housing \u2013 particularly with that elusive deposit on first homes.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, a growing personal financial issue is whether parents can afford to provide this financial assistance given their circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps an appropriate starting point for parents is to realistically assess the adequacy of their retirement savings and overall financial position, perhaps with the assistance of an adviser who understands their family circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>Much-publicised high levels of home ownership among older Australians can lead to inaccurate conclusions about the state of their financial wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that close to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rba.gov.au\/publications\/submissions\/housing-and-housing-finance\/inquiry-into-home-ownership\/home-ownership-rates.html\" target=\"_blank\">80 per cent of households aged over 65<\/a> &#8220;own&#8221; their homes, based on the Commonwealth Census.
