{"id":1547,"date":"2023-05-01T05:17:45","date_gmt":"2023-05-01T05:17:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/actinvest.com.au\/?p=1547"},"modified":"2023-05-01T05:17:45","modified_gmt":"2023-05-01T05:17:45","slug":"banks-launch-scam-awareness-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/actinvest.com.au\/index.php\/banks-launch-scam-awareness-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"Banks launch scam awareness campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The new campaign highlights the importance of customer alertness against criminal activity by scammers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" height=\"317\" src=\"https:\/\/acctweb.com.au\/images\/a-here-to-stay-DEC22.jpg\" width=\"475\" \/><\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Banking Association has launched a new campaign on cyber security amid a heightened security environment.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The ABA\u2019s (ABA) campaign \u2014 which will feature online and in newspapers \u2014 aims to raise awareness of a series of scam scenarios while providing customers with the tools to combat scam attempts.<\/p>\n<p>According to ABA, the awareness campaign will feature pertinent messages to help customers spot scams such as bank impersonation, E-Toll scams, investment scams and invoice scams.<\/p>\n<p>ABA chief executive Anna Bligh said the campaign emphasises the need for Australians to \u201cpause\u201d and consider what it being asked of them, while offering practical tips to aid customers in protecting themselves from scammers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs scams grow ever more complex and sophisticated, vigilance is required from all of us at all times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Banks have also been flagging the new campaign and action being taken to improve scam awareness, with\u00a0Marnie Baker (deputy chair of the ABA and\u00a0CEO and managing director of\u00a0Bendigo\u00a0Bank) adding: \u201cScams and fraud are an extremely important and challenging area, not just for banks, but for all of us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCustomers also play a vital role by remaining alert to suspicious messages and securing their personal information. Together with your help, we can reduce the incidents of scams and fraud,\u201d Ms Baker said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She flagged that\u00a0the bank would never ask customers for their details, or to transfer money, download software or login via a link sent through email or SMS.\u202f\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission\u2019s (ACCC) Scamwatch recorded 256,842 scams worth $596 million in the 12 months to February 2023, averaging 21,404 scams per month, worth $49.6 million.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the ACCC\u00a0called for greater vigilance\u00a0amid reports of bank customers losing up to $800,000 in life savings to scammers using new technology to deceive their victims, including making calls appear to come from the a bank\u2019s legitimate phone number or sending scam texts in the same conversation thread as genuine bank messages.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Bligh continued: \u201cThis new national campaign has important messages to fight scams, reinforcing that we all need to \u2018stop and listen for alarm bells\u2019 \u2014 if it doesn\u2019t feel quite right, it might be a scam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAustralians can take effective, preventative steps to help protect themselves against fraud and scams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new campaign is one of a range of important initiatives banks are undertaking with the community, government and other industries all playing an important role to fight this crime,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign also highlights\u00a0PayID\u00a0as a crucial tool in preventing scams, according to Ms Bligh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPayID helps customers to know who they are paying, before they pay.
